EDI & Human Rights: A Risk Perspective
Moderated by: Dave Keystone, (he/him), Producer, Host, davekeystone.com, Development Lead, Shelter Movers
Expand/collapse session description...
The last three years and counting have brought many longstanding issues to the forefront, such as the escalation of anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, and anti-Asian violence, the further disenfranchisement of persons with disabilities, and the increasing precarity and exploitation of marginalized workers, including those in the healthcare sector. These issues have prompted many organizations to consider investing in or furthering EDI initiatives.
However, there are many misconceptions about the purposes of EDI. There is often an over-focus on the diversity aspect of EDI and an oversight that the equity and inclusion aspects of EDI intersect with human rights, discrimination, and harassment. As such, human rights are commonly not considered as part of EDI work.
Leaving human rights out of the equation can cause vulnerabilities and result in serious health and safety, financial, and legal repercussions for an organization.
Discussion Points:
- What is the connection between EDI, human rights, discrimination, and harassment?
- What are the potential costs and liabilities to your organization if you do not take equity and human rights into account?
- What are your legislative obligations?
- How are equity and human rights vital to protecting your organization?
