Arlene joined HIROC in 1998, responsible for the daily operations of the HSRM Department. Arlene has over 40 years’ experience in patient safety, risk, quality and health information management, including implementing a risk and quality program as the first Manager of Quality and Risk Management at Markham Stouffville Hospital. As a previous client consultant and educator at the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), she brought the idea of subscriber reports to HIROC, which developed to the Risk Management Claims Analysis Reports (RMCAR). She also played key roles on projects with St. John’s Rehabilitation Hospital and the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care.
Arlene holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta, is a Certified Health Information Management Professional and has completed the Barton (risk management) Modules Program. In 2006, she became the first resident Canadian to successfully write the Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) exam, sponsored by the American Hospital Association. Arlene has also completed the Canadian Patient Safety Institute’s (CPSI) Patient Safety Officer Course, the Adult Education Certificate Course from the University of Toronto, the Osgoode Certificate in Health Law and Fundamentals of Leadership Effectiveness course from the Michener Institute. In 2015 Arlene successfully wrote the Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) exam, sponsored by the National Patient Safety Foundation in the US and in 2018 completed her Certificate in Patient Safety and Quality from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) based in Boston, Massachusetts. Arlene is an active member of the George Brown College Health Information Management Professional Advisory Committee.
