Rural and northern communities across Canada are facing complicated healthcare challenges, including geographic isolation, limited resources, workforce shortages, and barriers to accessing care. As a result, these communities are striving for innovation that can transform healthcare delivery.
On February 27-28, 2025, in Toronto and virtually, we welcomed delegates from across Canada to discuss the critical issues and some innovative solutions to address these issues. Delegates and speakers alike devoted 2 days to navigate how they were leading in the drive to impact change.
Here’s a short summary of two sessions that stood out to us at the Rural & Northern Healthcare Leadership Conference 2025.
Bridging the Gap: Strengthening Rural and Indigenous Nursing Through Community-Led Solutions
Canada’s rural and Indigenous communities face a critical healthcare gap, with nursing shortages threatening long-term sustainability.
Heather Bensler – Assistant Dean Academic Partnerships, Associate Professor (Teaching), Faculty of Nursing, University of Calgary – has walked us through the success of the Rural and Indigenous Community Route Nursing Program. Launched in 2021 with the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services, the program trains students within 120 km of their communities with the goal of training and retaining local healthcare workers.
What the attendees loved about this program was the Aonami (Spirit Helper) initiative with Siksika First Nation, which integrates Blackfoot knowledge, language, and Elders into the curriculum, strengthening cultural identity and trust.
The session also discussed the importance of community-driven education, flexible training models, and partnerships that support rural and Indigenous healthcare. We also learned about the role of sustainable funding, local leadership in healthcare education, and solutions tailored to each community’s unique needs.
Heather stressed the urgent need for long-term funding, more Bachelor-prepared instructors, and expanded simulation training hubs. “Local partnerships and innovative models are key,” she noted, warning that without systemic support, “We risk losing future nurses before they even begin their careers.”

Innovating Indigenous Healthcare: Lessons from Deep Space and Remote Communities
Leila Gillis, Chief Nursing Officer and Acting Director General at Indigenous Services Canada, highlighted many of the initiatives they are developing to transform healthcare delivery in rural and northern Canada.
Supported by the Canadian Space Agency, the Deep Space Healthcare Challenge is a competition to develop new diagnostic detection technology for remote areas in Canada.
Leila was inspired by the findings of this competition. Innovations like AI-powered dermatology diagnostics and autonomous medical robots are now being piloted in Indigenous communities.
“We need solutions that work in the most isolated areas”, Leila emphasized, where communication delays and limited resources mirror conditions in space.
Leila also discussed Easy Resus, an emergency response application already in use in northern Quebec, and the Connected Care Medical Module, a deployable health unit for disaster response.
The need for sustainable funding, cross-sector collaboration, and community-driven solutions is undeniable. “Innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about empowering communities to shape their own healthcare future,” Gillis stated.
